Peters Mill Run is not just another forest road. It is a Jeep Badge of Honor trail, part of the largest OHV system in Virginia, and one of the most popular off-road destinations on the East Coast. Sitting in the George Washington National Forest above the Shenandoah Valley, it draws riders from across the mid-Atlantic every season.
It also happens to be the kind of trail where your first two miles tell you everything about whether your rig is actually ready.
This is the 5th post in our Tax Season Trail Sale series at Lil B's Custom Fabrication. We started in Colorado. Now we are heading Southeast.

36 Miles of Trail in One System
Peters Mill Run is the flagship route in the Peters Mill Run and Taskers Gap OHV System — 36 miles of trails spread across the George Washington National Forest in Shenandoah County. Peters Mill Run itself is about 12 miles, running point-to-point from Woodstock Tower Road on the north end to Edinburg Gap on the south.
The trail follows the river it is named after, winding through dense forest canopy with viewpoints overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, ponds along the roadside, and seasonal creek crossings that keep things varied. Taskers Gap, the southern portion of the system, adds about a dozen marked loops with terrain ranging from smooth gravel to steep, rocky single-track.
For full-size Toyota and Lexus rigs, Peters Mill Run is the main event. Trucks and SUVs are welcome on the 12-mile Peters Mill Run trail. Most Taskers Gap loops are limited to vehicles 50 inches wide or less.
Those First Two Miles
Peters Mill Run opens with roughly two miles of rocky terrain that set the tone for the whole experience. Large embedded stones, uneven surfaces, and off-camber stretches test your clearance, your tire choice, and your approach angle before the trail mellows out into smoother forest road.
Here is what you are dealing with:
-
Embedded rock fields that require careful tire placement
-
Off-camber erosion ruts that push your vehicle toward the trail edge
-
Sharp rocks capable of catching sidewalls and exposed underbody components
-
Seasonal creek crossings with variable depth and hidden obstacles
-
Damp shaded sections under heavy tree canopy that hold moisture after rain
After the rocky opening, the middle section rewards you with a more relaxed cruise under towering hardwoods. But if you plan to extend your day into Taskers Gap, the difficulty ramps back up with steep climbs, narrow passages, and rocky terrain rated for advanced riders.
What the Trail Demands From Your Rig
The rocky opening stretch is where stock bumpers show their weaknesses. Factory plastic fascia sits too low for embedded rock obstacles. Low-hanging air dams catch on ledges. And when you misjudge a line, there are no recovery points to get yourself out.
A properly fitted front bumper solves all of that:
-
Higher approach angle to clear rock shelves cleanly
-
Steel or aluminum construction that takes impacts without cracking
-
Integrated recovery points for self-extraction
-
Winch-ready mounting for worst-case scenarios
For the creek crossings and mid-trail rock gardens, skid plates protect the components stock bumpers left exposed — drivetrain, steering, transfer case, and fuel tank. On a trail like Peters Mill Run where hidden rocks sit below water level, underbody armor is not optional. It is what separates a confident crossing from an expensive one.
Before You Go
Directions: I-81 Exit 279, east on SR 675 through Edinburg. Follow SR 675 east to Edinburg Gap at the top of Massanutten Mountain. The Edinburg Gap staging area has the most parking, a vault toilet, and access to both trail systems.
Permits: Required for all motorized use. $5 per day, purchased at local gas stations and stores in Edinburg and Woodstock. Not available at the trailhead.
Season: Closed from the first Monday in January through March. Best conditions late spring through fall. Summer offers shaded relief under the canopy.
Camping: Little Fort Campground has nine first-come, first-served sites with direct trail access.
Vehicle rules: Full-size trucks and SUVs are allowed on Peters Mill Run. Most Taskers Gap loops are restricted to 50 inches wide or less. Shared-use trail — expect ATVs, dirt bikes, mountain bikes, and hikers.
Tax Season Trail Sale
Tax refunds and trail reopenings hit at the same time in Virginia. Peters Mill Run opens back up at the end of March, right when most people have their refund in hand. The Tax Season Trail Sale at Lil B's is built around that timing.
A front bumper is the single upgrade that changes the most about how your vehicle handles trail obstacles. Better approach angles. Recovery points. Component protection. Winch capability. Everything else builds on that foundation.
If you have been waiting for the right time to upgrade, this is it. Explore the full Lil B's lineup of bumpers, skid plates, and armor built for Toyota and Lexus platforms.
More Trails Ahead
This is stop number two in the Tax Season Trail Sale series. Colorado was first. Virginia is now. The Southeast has more trails worth running, and we are covering them one by one.
